Updating the OS
Even though some may think that updating software and Operating Systems are only a waste of your precious work time, there are actually some very good reasons for you to update.
For example, they offer better security patches to your computer to prevent viruses, fix bugs that can cause lags, and improve stability overall, and even feature enhancements. Overall it is one of the best ways to keep your laptop healthy and up-to-date. Just for clarity by updating, we do not entirely mean upgrading to the new Operating System, like from Lion to Mountain Lion or from Windows 7 to Windows 8.
Press the Apple icon on the top left hand corner of your window. Then go to software updates, after that a screen will pop up, then press install.
When there is an update available for your computer a system icon will appear in the notification tray located near the bottom right of your desktop. Press the update icon and a new window will appear giving you a list of recommended updates. Press the install button to begin.
All software updates, although seemingly trivial, can offer protection against a variety of vulnerabilities. Most of us will readily update our anti-virus software; we all understand that it can prevent a virus from taking control of our computer or deleting our data.
More importantly not only does your Operating System need updating your applications also need updating such as the Adobe Creative Suites. Updating these applications is the only way to gain performance out of them.
For the Mac OS to find and apply an update to a specific program navigate to the top of the screen and the update option should be found under the help menu.
In Windows finding updates is also very similar on Mac OS, again the Updates option is normally found under the help section.
Updating Graphic Drivers

Updating your AMD or NVIDIA chip is the key to get better optimizations for your hardware and software for the sole purpose of better for performance. Luckily for Mac users your graphic drivers updates with the OS.
TIPS WHEN UPDATING
Most of the time it is highly recommended that you keep updating perhaps once every two or three weeks. However, during these updates it is advisable that your computer should be plugged in rather than on battery.
Whether your PC is using an NVIDIA graphic chip or an AMD chip access the Graphic control panel first by right-clicking in the middle of your desktop.
Go to the Help navigation panel and click update
The update panel should be found under the Information tab.
