Closing Down an Open Platform

Dhira Khewsubtrakool March 10, 2014

When the iPhone was first announced in the summer of 2007, it caused waves throughout the mobile market, with many proclaiming it to be one of the greatest innovations in the mobile industry. Simultaneously however, this announcement left many, especially Google, uneasy at Apple’s potential dominance in the industry. They saw an ominous future for smartphones if Apple was allowed to monopolize the market. It was said that if there was no competition to fight against Apple, there would be a draconian future—a future where one man, one company, one device, [and] one carrier would be our only choice.

Anno Chang March 10, 2014

Recently, Microsoft and Apple both released an update to their operating system, from Windows 8 and OS X Lion to Windows 8.1 and OS X Mavericks 10.9, respectively. Flattening iOS 7

Dhira Khewsubtrakool March 8, 2014

Back in September of 2013, Apple released its newest iteration of iOS 7, and marked the biggest release of iOS since Steve Jobs showed the world the first iPhone in 2007. As Evernote’s CEO, Phil Libin, puts it, the day iOS7 Launch was “the biggest day in technology ever. There has never been another day like this in the history of the universe where hundreds of millions of people will see a big change to something that they’re used to. Nothing of this scale has ever occurred.”

On October 31st, 2013, Google finally unveiled their latest operating system—Android Kit-Kat—and to match it, a new smartphone named the Nexus 5. This reference-design phone (manufactured by LG) is the first to be equipped with Android 4.4, and it’s electrified the market. Specs, display, price, there’s nothing it lacks except design. The Nexus 5 also works unlocked, so you can use it anywhere in the world.

Failure of Microsoft Windows RT

Tech Crewsaders Admin September 27, 2013

Last June during a press conference in California, Microsoft announced a new product: the RT Surface. During the conference, CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the Surface, a tablet meant to rival the iPad. The Surface is actually equipped with functions that are not available even in  comparison with the IPad: a connected kickstand, attach-and-remove abilities, and Windows 8 software. Looking at past products, the RT Surface is the first computing device made by Microsoft since the hit-consumer release of the Xbox. The response to this release was spectacular. The buzz on the internet was unprecedented and critics were also doling out positive reviews. It was the first time in history that Microsoft had created a public rage on a computing device besides a gaming console as previously mentioned. The Surface actually seemed like a product comparable to those of other companies such as Apple and Samsung and one that had the potential to be commercially dominating.

Windows 8 Review

Dhira Khewsubtrakool December 14, 2012

Finally! After years of beta testing and developer previews, Microsoft released the official Windows 8 OS on October 26th. Designed using the (non-metro) modern user interface, Windows 8 is available on tablets, ultra books, and on your good ol’ PC. You can also download the OS directly from Microsoft with a small fee of $39.99, which is an affordable price for an upgrade from Windows 7!  Windows 8 in some ways is like a rebirth of the original windows experience since its day one in 1985. The result? A completely new operating system optimized for touch and new windows applications.
